The cost of living in Annecy in June 2006
Contents |
[edit] Accommodation
- La résidence des Marquisats (single room with suite bathroom) costs 340€ per month which can be reduced with the APL. The Marquisats is only available for students staying a full academic year.
- Lodging with a family costs around 200€ a month (including breakfast, evening meal and all meals during the weekends). Families are most often used only for short stays.
- Hotels for when friends/family visit cost on average 75€ per person per night (based on two people sharing a double room).
[edit] Eating out
- Set menu in a restaurant – from around 15€ or two/three courses.
- Panini/ sandwich – around 3.20€ but some shops offer student deals of 3€ for a sandwich, drink and patisserie.
- You can obtain a card at the restaurant in La résidence des Marquisats which allows you to choose a starter, main course and dessert for only 2.60€. You must purchase a card for 26€ at first which is the equivalent of 10 meals and you can then add money to your card whenever you wish.
- Beer/lager – These tend to be very expensive. A pint in Finn Kelly’s (the Irish bar) costs 6€! So it is much cheaper to buy in the shops (around 3€ for a pack of Heineken or Kronenbourg).
- Wine – varies from 2.20€ in the shops to 12€ for a bottle in a restaurant!
- Coffee/hot chocolate/tea in a café – around 2.50 – 3€.
- Advice from Carlos, ERASMUS student from Tenerife : eating out: highly recommended: KEBAB!!! between 3.50€ and 4.50€, tasty and energetic!!
- Shopping: my advice is to try E.Leclerc and buy its white brand "Eco +". For fresh goods go to the markets in town and for the best prices the best idea is to compare and choose (try also Aldi and Lidl).
[edit] Entertainment
- Cinema – from 5-8€ (unfortunately no student discount).
- Bowling – around 7€per person per game
- Club alpin français, recommended for mountaineers and nature lovers.
42€ inscription for the year, opportunity to paraglide, climb, etc... as for martial arts or gyms: too expensive!! The gym in Seynod (neighbouring town of Annecy costs 80€ for 3months’ membership, but apparently isn’t very modern).
- Swimming – costs 2.85€ for student and 3.65€ for an adult at the Jean Régis pool.
- Ice-skating – has the same tariffs as the swimming pool because the rink is located in the same building.
- Laser Quest – costs 7€ for a student (8€ for an adult) for a 30-minute game and 12€ for a student (14€ for an adult) for an hour’s game.
- Speed boat – 24€ for 30 minutes and 39€ for an hour’s rental.
[edit] Transport
* 1 euro for a ticket on the bus, which can be used twice within 1 hour, it is much cheaper however to buy a pack of student tickets (billets jeunes) from the bus station or most ‘tabacs’. It costs 6€ for 10. * Return train journey from Annecy to Chambéry costs around 15€. * Taxi ride from Marquisats to the train station costs between 7 and 10€. * ‘Frossard’ coach to Geneva costs 11€
Bankcards are accepted by most businesses. In any case, we recommend you to arrive in Annecy with some Euros at hand, so that you have enough for the bare essentials (food, transport, etc.). N.B. the prices given above are just a rough approximation. It is not advisable to plan a budget based on these prices as you will find both lower and higher prices all around the town.
